Jarty Gombez 4130m – Campsite in sheep shed 4100m

Day 8 43 km 3hr35
We woke to snow on the ground, so the best thing was to enjoyed a warm soak in the pool. Very cold takeoff at 9.45am. We followed the valley down and knew we had to leave the “main” Murghab road by heading east.

The road appeared to stop at a mud house where we knew we had to cross the river. A local man gave a wave in a vague direction of the river crossing but we went to far downstream. When we looked back he was at the crossing but by the time we returned he had moved and we missed it again. This was to be the first of 4 river crossings. Shoes off each time to push the bikes across.

We stopped for lunch in sun by the river after 3 hours cycling.

Restarted cycling at 2pm for the rest of our river crossings. Just as well we kept dry feet as light hail started at 4pm and it got very cold again. We decided against a lovely campsite in a small canyon due to unknown weather ahead. In good weather it would have been perfect. We headed back a half km to where we had seen shelter.

Marco Polo sheep – now hard to see in the wild….

This turned out to be a sheep shed but it would protect us from any weather. We cleaned it up the best we could and set the tent up inside the building. The cold wind continued but the weather did improve. Early to bed.
